Nagaland Governor’s Address Lays Out Plan to Resolve Naga Political Issue

In his inaugural address to the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) on March 3, Governor La. Ganesan emphasized the government’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Naga political issue. While opening the sixth session of the NLA, Ganesan highlighted the progress made so far, citing the consultative meeting with apex and influential tribal bodies and civil society organizations held on September 12, 2024. The meeting aimed to deliberate on the Naga political issue and ensure the people’s voices are heard.

The Governor praised the members of the NLA for their whole-hearted cooperation and reiterated the Chief Minister’s assurances on the issue. He also informed that the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues met with the Union Home Minister on November 21, 2024, to apprise him of the people’s desire for a swift solution. Regarding the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO) demand, Ganesan reported that the government submitted its comments on the third draft of the Memorandum of Settlement in respect of the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority to the Ministry of Home Affairs on November 6, 2024.

The Governor noted substantial progress has been made, and he expressed hope that any remaining concerns of the ENPO will be addressed. He also touched on law and order, infrastructure updates, and government policies, elaborating on the state’s efforts to keep pace with development. He highlighted key infrastructure projects, including the creation of Meluri district, jurisdictional changes in various police stations, and the construction of key infrastructure projects.

Ganesan provided updates on the performance of the Nagaland Police, mentioning that 1,308 cognisable cases were registered, including 108 related to Naga political groups, and over Rs 44 crore in assets were seized in 2024. He also reported on the completion of key infrastructure projects under the Police Engineering Project, including the construction of the Superintendent of Police offices in Wokha and Tuensang, as well as the officers’ mess and NGOs’ mess at Police Complex, Chumoukedima.

The Governor emphasized the importance of cooperative efforts between the government, civil society, and the people to ensure the smooth implementation of government policies and the overall development of the state. He urged the members to work together, highlighting that their spirit of cooperation should be extended to the wider society. The discussion on the Governor’s address is scheduled for March 4, alongside the laying of Annual Administrative and Assembly Committee Reports and the introduction of Government Bills and rules.

In conclusion, the Governor’s address underscored the government’s commitment to resolving the Naga political issue and promoting a peaceful and stable environment. As the NLA session continues until March 8, it remains to be seen how the discussions on the Governor’s address and other key issues will unfold. In the meantime, the people of Nagaland await with bated breath for a solution that will bring lasting peace and prosperity to their region.
