Mizoram: Union Minister Harsh Malhotra Inspects Highway and Bridge Projects, Urges Completion on Schedule
In a three-day visit to Mizoram, Union Minister Harsh Malhotra, responsible for the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, inspected several highway and bridge projects under the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) and the state’s Public Works Department (PWD). The visit aimed to oversee the progress of ongoing projects and promote the socio-economic growth of the state, particularly along the Myanmar and Bangladesh borders.
Road Projects Underway
During his visit, Malhotra was briefed on the 33 road projects currently being undertaken by NHIDCL, covering 820 km of national highways in Mizoram at a cost of Rs 19,800 crore. The projects aim to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, and enhance the overall economic development of the region. To ensure effective monitoring and supervision, NHIDCL has set up project monitoring units in Kolasib, Seling, Lunglei, and Lawngtlai.
Major Projects in Focus
The minister also visited the sites of two significant projects: the four-lane Mualkhang-Sairang sector and the two-lane Aizawl bypass road on National Highway-6 (NH 6). The Mualkhang-Sairang project aims to enhance connectivity between Aizawl and Silchar, Assam, while the Aizawl bypass aims to reduce traffic congestion in the state capital and improve connectivity between Sairang and Seling.
Bridge Project Update
Malhotra inspected the ongoing 90-meter steel-arch bridge project over the Tlawng River on NH-44A, which is being constructed under the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) mode with supervisory assistance from the state PWD. The minister urged officials to complete the project on schedule and promised to return for its inauguration upon completion.
Additional Visits and Meetings
During his visit, the minister also inspected the Road Safety Division’s Inspection and Certification Centre, an ongoing project worth Rs 7.1 crore. He conducted an aerial inspection of the completed Seling-Dulte sector of NH 6 and the ongoing Keifang-Tuivai road project on NH 102B. The minister also visited Saitual district, meeting officials, village council leaders, and NGO representatives.
