Manipur Governor’s Deadline Ends, Over 300 Weapons Surrendered
Guwahati: In a significant development, more than 300 weapons and a large quantity of ammunition were voluntarily handed over to the authorities by citizens in Manipur on Thursday, the last day of Governor AK Bhalla’s seven-day deadline.
The weapons, which were looted from various police armouries during the height of the Meitei-Kuki conflict in May 2023, were surrendered by various individual groups, youth volunteers, community leaders, civil society organizations, and women organizations.
According to police sources, 246 weapons were deposited at the 1st Manipur Rifles campus in Imphal, while 61 were deposited in various other locations in both the valley and hill districts. The Arambai Tenggol, a Meitei culturalist militia group founded in 2020, surrendered most of these weapons.

A Final Push:
As the deadline came to a close, the governor had issued a strict warning to those who failed to comply with the stipulated time frame, stating that they would face appropriate legal action as per the law.
"The people of Manipur, both from the valley and the hills, have endured hardships for over 20 months due to a series of unfortunate incidents that disrupted peace and communal harmony," Governor AK Bhalla had said.
