Urgent Alert: Negligence Halts Progress in Guwahati’s Patorkuchi – A Community in Crisis
Guwahati’s Ward 45, represented by Councillor Madhabi Talukdar and home to approximately 25,000 residents and 20,000 voters, struggles with significant infrastructure woes despite recent development attempts. Spanning areas such as Patorkuchi, Alok Nagar, Sushila Path, Bakrapara, and Pillingkata, the ward showcases severe shortcomings in road construction, drainage, street lighting, and waste management, largely due to a mix of administrative inefficiency and resident non-cooperation.
Road development remains incomplete, with only 13 out of 112 approved roads constructed, largely owing to residents’ refusal to relinquish land. This issue prolongs connectivity problems, compounding during the monsoons when unsafe conditions necessitate circuitous routes. The quality of already completed roads is suspect, with rapid deterioration revealing potential mismanagement in material use.
Street lighting installation is inconsistent, resulting in poorly lit areas that foster security concerns and contribute to road accidents. Drainage problems persist due to open, garbage-clogged drains, exacerbated by unregulated waste disposal. Although regular cleaning occurs, residents’ habitual littering renders these efforts futile. Talukdar’s attempts to construct effective drainage systems face resistance when space requirements encroach upon private property.
Garbage collection challenges remain, highlighted by low uptake of Guwahati Municipal Corporation’s services even after fee removal. Waste accumulation exacerbates health hazards, as market vendors and residents habitually dispose of trash in undesignated areas. The subsequent increase in stray animals and foul odours further deteriorates living conditions.
Crime, including theft and drug abuse, persists, with areas like Basistha Ashram becoming hubs for illicit activity. Despite healthcare being sufficient, the unhygienic environment raises potential health risks like dengue and malaria. Crucial projects, such as the Guwahati Jal Board’s water supply, are pending.
Urgent action, both governmental and public, is vital to avert irreversible infrastructural decline. Transparency, stricter regulations, and civic responsibility are essential to transforming Ward 45 into a developed, sustainable community. Without prompt, coordinated efforts, the ward risks becoming emblematic of neglect and decay.
