Outrage Erupts in Assam: Protesters Fiercely Burn Effigy of Himanta Biswa Sarma Over Attack on Congress MP
Tensions escalated in Dhubri as protesters set ablaze an effigy of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma outside Rajib Bhawan on February 20. This protest was sparked by an attack on Congress MP Rakibul Hussain earlier that day.
The assault on Hussain occurred at Natun Bazar while he was en route to a Congress workers’ meeting in Gunabari. Reports indicate that a group of masked individuals, brandishing black flags, ambushed the MP and subsequently attacked him. Amidst the turmoil, Hussain’s bodyguard was also injured. Security forces intervened by firing warning shots into the air, ensuring Hussain’s safe departure from the volatile scene.
Effigy burning has emerged as a routine form of political protest in Assam. The incident at Dhubri follows a pattern of previous demonstrations where effigies of CM Sarma were burned. Two months ago, protesters ignited an effigy outside Indira Bhawan in Sribhumi, reacting to the death of a Congress worker. Similarly, six months earlier, the Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA) held a protest in Dibrugarh, condemning alleged police brutality and setting fire to an effigy.
These acts underline a growing discontent within Assam’s political environment, with effigy burning serving as a symbolic expression of protest against perceived injustices. The consistent use of this protest method highlights the rising tensions and dissatisfaction with the current political administration.
The series of protests and confrontations underscore the volatile atmosphere in Assam, raising concerns about the potential for further unrest. As the political climate remains charged, authorities face the challenge of addressing these grievances while maintaining law and order.
