Delta Air Lines’ CEO Ed Bastian reassured the public about the airline’s safety measures following a recent incident in Toronto where a regional jet flipped upon landing amid challenging winter conditions. The pilots, noted for their experience, executed an emergency evacuation after landing in high winds and freezing temperatures post-snowstorm. The incident injured 21 of the 80 onboard, with only one remaining hospitalized, all expected to recover. Delta offers $30,000 goodwill payments to passengers without affecting their legal rights.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is conducting a thorough investigation, analyzing data from the aircraft’s black boxes. The crash closed two runways at Toronto Pearson Airport, impacting flight capacity. The CRJ900 jet is being prepared for removal, and the runway will be inspected pre-reopening. Separately, Bastian expressed no concern over FAA employee layoffs, reassured by the Trump administration’s commitment to air safety enhancements, including hiring air traffic controllers and upgrading technology.
