Revolutionary Digital Empowerment Transforms Meghalaya’s Fisheries in Ampati with Unprecedented Innovation
The National Fisheries Digital Platform Empowerment Program, organized by the Office of the Superintendent of Fisheries, took place on February 18 in Ampati. This event marks a pivotal move towards the digital transformation of the fisheries sector in the state, aiming to provide fishermen and fish farmers with vital digital tools to boost productivity, encourage sustainability, and connect to larger markets.
Risa V.C. Sangma, Superintendent of Fisheries, Ampati, inaugurated the program, underlining digital empowerment’s importance in modernizing the fisheries sector. She introduced the National Fisheries Digital Platform as a centralized hub offering real-time access to government schemes, weather forecasts, market trends, and sustainable fishing practices. Sangma emphasized the alignment of this initiative with the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and the Meghalaya State Aquaculture Mission (MSAM), both of which focus on improving the socio-economic conditions of fish farmers while conserving aquatic biodiversity.
A central theme of the event was financial discipline, particularly in timely loan repayments, crucial for ongoing government support. Sangma encouraged participants to leverage the digital platform effectively, using the resources provided to enhance benefits. The state’s continued efforts to bolster the fisheries sector through policy measures were also highlighted.
Participants received practical training on navigating the National Fisheries Digital Platform, learning to check market prices, track weather, apply for government schemes, and maintain digital financial records. The on-spot registration for the platform, facilitated by the Common Service Centre (CSC), Ampati, ensured immediate access to essential digital services. CSC representatives helped beneficiaries create digital profiles, simplifying their participation in government schemes and market integration.
The program also distributed essential inputs like fish seeds, fish feed, and aquaculture equipment under MSAM and PMMSY to enhance production, improve fish quality, and boost income opportunities for local farmers. Beneficiaries shared positive feedback, noting past improvements in livelihoods and expressing optimism about the digital platform’s potential to streamline operations, reduce intermediaries, and enhance market access.
