Inspiring Triumph: Unyielding Grit and Resilience Fuel a Heartfelt Journey
Editor,
The editorial on “Women Breaking Barriers” (ST February 18, 2025) eloquently highlights Iaishah Rymbai’s inspiring journey. As a single mother of four and founder of EriWeave, a sustainable silk brand in Meghalaya, India, Iaishah empowers women artisans while producing high-quality, cruelty-free silk fabrics. With support from PRIME Meghalaya in 2022, she refined her business model, leading to a successful Rs 20 lakh investment for 12% equity on Shark Tank India from Anupam Mittal and Namita Thapar. This investment will help expand EriWeave’s reach and continue uplifting local artisans. While women have made significant strides in business, challenges like gender bias and unequal pay persist. However, ongoing efforts are paving the way for greater achievements. Thanks to the Meghalaya government for fostering entrepreneurial growth through PRIME Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, concerns over deforestation in Shillong are rising. A green patch between the Chief Secretary’s residence and Tapoban bungalow is being decimated, allegedly for real estate development. Trees are being systematically removed, causing environmental despair. The Forest Department is urged to intervene and preserve these vital green spaces, as their disappearance threatens the city’s ecological balance. Suggestions include fencing off vulnerable areas and initiating afforestation programs.
Lastly, the construction of the new St. Anthony’s LP School is stalled due to an ongoing Public Interest Litigation. The delay compromises students’ safety and education as temporary arrangements falter under growing class sizes. The old building’s structural integrity issues are dangerous, emphasizing the urgent need for a new facility. Authorities are urged to expedite construction despite legal challenges to ensure students have a safe and conducive learning environment.
Yours etc.,
