Karachi Faces Surge in Respiratory Illnesses, Influenza H1N1 Cases Rise Sharply

Respiratory illnesses are escalating in Karachi, with Influenza H1N1 being the predominant strain. Medical professionals are urging residents to adopt safety measures, including wearing masks. Dr. Irfan Siddiqui, an emergency doctor at Jinnah Hospital, highlighted a concerning shortage of the H1N1 influenza vaccine at the facility, leaving patients to purchase it independently. Both outpatient and emergency departments are witnessing a surge in H1N1 cases, yet the government has not facilitated vaccine distribution, which is typically imported.
Dr. Siddiqui noted that while H1N1 hasn’t been classified as high-risk, those with pre-existing critical conditions may require ICU care. The virus notably affects children under five, adults over 65, and pregnant women and can lead to pneumonia if untreated.
He stressed the importance of precautionary steps and timely healthcare to prevent disease escalation. Meanwhile, infectious disease expert Professor Saeed Khan pointed out the seasonal rise in respiratory infections, with Influenza A and B, particularly the H1N1 subtype, being prevalent. He advocated vaccination as a proactive shield against influenza’s spread.
The Sindh Health Department’s data indicates 248 respiratory illness cases in Karachi within six weeks, including 119 H1N1 cases. In response, the department issued directives urging hospitals to provide protective gear to staff and enforce mask-wearing and social distancing measures.
As the city grapples with this health challenge, the emphasis remains on prevention and vaccination to curb the spread of Influenza H1N1 effectively.
