Heartwarming Initiative: Assam Team’s Safe Havens Fuel Bird Breeding and Champion Habitat Protection
In Guwahati, Assam, a dedicated team of 30 students and a teacher has taken significant steps to promote bird conservation and habitat protection. The group, led by nature writer and school headmistress Girimallika Saikia, formed the “Chorai Bandhav” (Friends of Birdlife) initiative at Bongaon Chola Higher Secondary School in the Golaghat district. Their effort involves creating artificial bird nests made from roasted mud, offering a vital sanctuary for bird species amid threats like climate change, deforestation, and urbanization.
On February 14, the team celebrated India’s first Bird Nest Conservation Day, coinciding with the start of the bird breeding season. This timing is crucial as it allows birds to prepare for nesting. Recognizing the plight of local bird populations in Assam due to habitat loss, the project’s artificial nests have already seen success, with species like Oriental magpie-robins, common mynas, and house sparrows using them for laying eggs and hatching chicks.
Saikia began the initiative in 2024, with particular focus on involving students from tea gardens to raise awareness in these communities. She emphasizes the importance of extending this concept to other schools throughout Assam, improving local bird protection efforts. The initiative has expanded under the project “Bondhu Vidyalay,” involving students from seven different schools, with plans to observe the Bird Nest Conservation Day in other schools next year. By fostering an understanding of environmental issues and taking actionable steps, this initiative offers hope for bird conservation in Assam and serves as a model for other regions facing similar challenges.
