Celebrating Success: Award-Winning Nagaland Forest Project Transforms Ecosystems and Boosts Incomes
The Nagaland Forest Management Project (NFMP) has been recognized for its commendable efforts in enhancing forest ecosystems and facilitating income generation. The project received the prestigious SKOCH Award, a testament to its impactful initiatives. Ango Konyak, Deputy Project Director of NFMP, and Wennyei Konyak, Resident Commissioner of Nagaland House in New Delhi, accepted the award at the 100th SKOCH summit, as announced by the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) Nagaland.
Launched in 2017, NFMP is a decade-long initiative set to culminate in 2027. It is primarily focused on rehabilitating jhum areas—traditional shifting cultivation zones—and enhancing local livelihoods. The project underscores the importance of sustainable forest conservation and employs village-specific interventions, which are spearheaded by joint forest management committees.
NFMP aims to reach 185 villages across 11 districts of Nagaland, benefiting 22 distinct forest ranges. It is tasked with managing a substantial 79,096 hectares of forest area. In its bid to bolster livelihoods, the project plans to establish 555 self-help groups, fostering community-driven development and economic self-reliance.
The award and recognition at the SKOCH summit highlight NFMP’s significant contribution to sustainable development and environmental preservation in Nagaland. Through its targeted and community-centric approach, the project is poised to make substantial strides in forest rehabilitation and economic empowerment for local communities. The NFMP continues to build a blueprint for how forest management and community involvement can lead to positive environmental and socio-economic outcomes.
