Why India Desperately Needs DOGE: A Bold Call to Embrace Economic Transformation by Tavleen Singh
During the Indian Prime Minister’s recent visit to Washington, a notable moment was his meeting with Elon Musk, alongside Musk’s family. This encounter stirred curiosity about whether the Prime Minister inquired about the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), instituted by Donald Trump during his second presidency. Under Musk’s leadership, this department drastically reduced government spending, leading to significant job cuts and the closure of programs like USAID.
In India, despite Narendra Modi’s ambition for ‘minimum government and maximum governance’, the governmental framework remains cumbersome. With over 48 lakh employees and pensions for nearly 68 lakh retirees, India’s governmental system is burdened by inefficiency. Many offices are overstaffed, a remnant of the country’s socialist past, when the government was the primary employer due to strict regulations on the private sector.
There’s a call for trimming redundant ministries, such as the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and consolidating others like Agriculture and Animal Husbandry. Revamping this system could unlock potential in the private sector, fostering job growth.
Moreover, a critique was raised on the luxurious lifestyles maintained by Indian ministers and bureaucrats, especially in prime estates like Lutyens’ Delhi, advocating for their commercial use to finance urban improvements and environmental cleanups.
Finally, abolishing outdated roles like the Collector could help modernize and democratize administration. Modi could initiate reforms with the insights from Musk on DOGE, pushing for a more efficient governance model that aligns with India’s development aspirations. This approach is essential for achieving the new slogan: Make India Great Again (MIGA).
