Punjab’s Stand Against Corruption: AAP Government Demands Integrity and Accountability from Officers
Following the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) poor performance in the Delhi Assembly elections, the Punjab AAP government is intensifying efforts to enhance accountability within the bureaucracy and empower its MLAs and MPs. The administration has directed government officials to be more responsive and accountable, emphasizing that feedback will not only be gathered from the public but also from party legislators.
In a meeting led by Chief Secretary KAP Sinha on February 12, immediately after AAP’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal addressed Punjab’s leadership, Sinha instructed officers to prioritize transparency, accountability, and integrity in public service. This directive was followed by a strongly-worded letter to all top officials, including Special Chief Secretaries, Additional Chief Secretaries, and field officers, warning of potential disciplinary action for non-compliance.
The letter emphasized the government’s commitment to eradicating corruption and ensuring a citizen-friendly governance model. It instructed officers to make public interactions seamless and free from harassment or demands for bribes, promising efficient and polite service delivery. A robust feedback mechanism involving MPs and MLAs will be established, with results potentially impacting service records and annual appraisals, or leading to disciplinary measures.
The move comes amidst dissatisfaction among AAP legislators who felt sidelined in public offices, which they argue hindered public service. Additionally, there have been persistent reports of corruption plaguing these offices. Punjab’s government aims to not only reinforce honest and effective governance but also to empower its elected representatives to better serve the public’s interests.
With these measures, AAP seeks to address bureaucratic inefficiencies and restore public trust while navigating internal party dynamics post-election setbacks.
