NASA highlights that the colorful iridescent effects are due to Mars’ atmosphere being largely composed of carbon dioxide.
Mars’ twilight clouds were first spotted during the Pathfinder mission in 1997 and have been subsequently observed by the Curiosity rover since 2019, marking the fourth consecutive year of these sightings. However, scientists continue to be intrigued by the localized appearance of these clouds, speculating that gravity waves, which cool the atmosphere, might facilitate the formation of carbon dioxide ice only in certain regions.
NASA showcased this celestial phenomenon on the social platform X, with the post sparking excitement and awe among users. Mark Lemmon, an atmospheric scientist with the Space Science Institute, noted his initial disbelief at the sight and how the predictability of these cloud formations now allows for planned observations.
