Unveiling the Legacy: Former CM Ibobi Singh’s Impactful Leadership Journey
The Manipur Congress has criticized the imposition of President’s Rule in the state as a blatant disregard for the people’s mandate. During a press conference at Congress Bhavan, former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh condemned the move, asserting that it undermines the democratic process given the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holds an absolute majority in the state. Ibobi expressed disappointment with central leaders, including the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister, for instituting this rule, which he deemed disrespectful to the voters’ choice.
Ibobi also addressed the resignation of N Biren Singh from the Chief Minister post, stating it was not in the public’s interest. Singh’s resignation occurred right before the Manipur Legislative Assembly was set to discuss the budget and shortly after his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi. Ibobi criticized the timing, suggesting it disrupted smooth governance.
He emphasized the Congress party’s commitment to maintaining Manipur’s territorial integrity, voicing concern over the central government’s constitutional power to alter state boundaries. Ibobi revisited the party’s efforts during both UPA and NDA regimes to prevent territorial disintegration, advocating for constitutional amendments to protect the state’s borders.
Additionally, Ibobi criticized the ongoing conflict in the region, nearing two years without resolution despite substantial state and central security presence. He questioned the central government’s motives, implying potential hidden agendas, and urged prompt resolution of the turmoil. He called for any new leadership to focus on ending the conflict and prioritizing the resettlement of displaced persons.
