Shocking Scandal: Prominent Digboi Businessman’s Arrest in Massive LPG Cylinder Fraud
In a significant operation against illegal activities, Assam Police successfully dismantled an LPG smuggling racket in Tinsukia’s Digboi on Thursday evening. Following a complaint by the General Manager of the AOD-administered Gopenari LPG Bottling Plant, police apprehended Medini Moran, a 30-year-old businessman, from his residence. Moran faces charges of criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, cheating, and theft.
The investigation revealed discrepancies in LPG cylinder transport: of 312 cylinders, only 244 were accounted for, with 68 missing from a truck at Moran’s residence. An inquiry is ongoing under the Essential Commodities Act of 1955, with police closely examining the smuggling network.
Concerns were raised about the security measures at the AOD LPG plant, where unauthorized sealing materials, such as shrink caps, were found accessible. Despite scanning equipment, security personnel have reportedly failed to stop cylinder thefts, sparking questions about the plant’s inadequate safety protocols over the years.
Authorities have filed a case (No. 31/25) against Moran, citing multiple sections, and have sought a three-day police remand to deepen the investigation. This move aims to dismantle the wider LPG smuggling network active in Upper Assam.
Officials are scrutinizing the potentially compromised role of the security department, which has been allegedly involved in misconduct over a decade. Inspector Dibya Jyoti Dutta emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to recover the missing AOD property and strengthen security measures. This crackdown underscores Assam’s efforts to combat illegal activity and enhance safety in the region.
