Guwahati: The northeastern region of India is witnessing a robust entrepreneurial surge, with a total of 2,054 startups, as announced by the central government. Leading this drive is Assam, boasting 1,487 startups, followed by Manipur with 179 and Tripura with 141 startups, revealed Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), in a written response to the Rajya Sabha.
This burgeoning startup culture underscores Assam’s pivotal role as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurial ambition within the region. Amplifying this growth is the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd., which has been instrumental in nurturing first-generation entrepreneurs. Through the North East Enterprise Development Scheme, it offers term loans covering up to 75% of the project cost, capped at Rs 50 lakh, at an interest rate of 8% repayable over seven years.
Aiding this momentum is the ‘Startup India’ initiative, launched on January 16, 2016, aimed at fostering a conducive environment for innovation and investment nationwide, with a special emphasis on the Northeast. This initiative has significantly bolstered Assam’s startup ecosystem, reinforcing the Centre’s commitment to building a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation and encouraging investment.
India’s startup ecosystem, recognized as the world’s third-largest, has registered over 1.59 lakh startups, according to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) as of January 15. These startups have generated more than 16.6 lakh direct jobs across various industries, notably within the IT sector, healthcare and life sciences, and professional services.
In parallel, the Centre is investing in the region’s future, including a Rs 10,000 crore initiative to establish a new urea plant in Assam’s Namrup. These strategic efforts reflect the government’s broader vision for sustainable development and economic resilience in the Northeast.
