Ragging at Kerala Nursing College Sparks Outrage

Kottayam, Feb 13: Alarming footage revealing brutal ragging practices at the Government Nursing College in Kottayam has surfaced, showcasing severe abuse inflicted by senior students upon their juniors. The distressing video, obtained by Gandhinagar police, depicts a first-year nursing student enduring horrific acts of violence and humiliation at the hands of third-year students in the boys’ hostel.

The victim was reportedly stripped naked, tied to a cot, and subjected to physical torment that included having dumbbells placed on his private parts and witnessing his body pierced with a compass. The footage also shows the student lying immobilized on a bed, covered in lotion and screaming in agony while facial cream was poured into his mouth. His tormentors counted aloud during the piercing ordeal, taunting him with derogatory remarks.

This brutal act was recorded by third-year students, leading to the arrest of five individuals: Samuel Johnson (20), Rahul Raj (22), Jeev (18), Rijil Jith (20), and Vivek (21). Among them, one was reportedly an office-bearer of a nursing student organization.

The ragging incidents began in November of the previous year, according to the complaint filed with local authorities. In response, Kottayam District Police Chief Shahul Hameed confirmed a detailed investigation is underway to uncover if more students were victimized. The police are actively recording statements from other students to establish the extent of the abuse.

This incident has sparked outrage among the community and calls for stringent measures against such inhumane practices. The shocking revelations have ignited a debate on campus safety and the accountability of educational institutions in preventing such incidents.
