Fiery Rebuttal: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi Dismantles Assam CM’s ‘Laughable’ Accusations Against Wife
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has rebuffed allegations made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing his wife, Elizabeth Colburn, of connections with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Gogoi dismissed the claims as “laughable,” sarcastically quipping that if his wife were an ISI agent, then he must be an R&AW agent. He accused CM Sarma of orchestrating these allegations to distract from corruption accusations against himself, indicating such tactics were a familiar BJP strategy.
Recalling similar allegations during previous Lok Sabha elections, Gogoi noted that despite such smear campaigns, the electorate in Jorhat had renewed their confidence in him. He interpreted Sarma’s actions as an attempt to fortify his political standing amid increasing public dissatisfaction, especially with the looming 2026 Assam Assembly elections. According to Gogoi, the BJP’s reliance on baseless attacks pointed to their uncertain position.
The controversy gained momentum when CM Sarma posted on social media platform X, asserting Gogoi’s connections to Pakistan, supported by a photograph of him at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi from a 2015 meeting on Indo-Pak relations. Sarma questioned Gogoi’s presence at the event, given his lack of membership in the Parliamentary Committee on External Affairs at the time.
Gogoi’s rebuttal underscores an escalating verbal exchange as political tensions build in anticipation of the critical state elections. The episode illustrates the charged atmosphere in Assam’s political landscape, with each side leveraging accusations in a battle for public perception and electoral advantage.
