Unleashing Hope: Meghalaya’s Bold Immunisation Drive Bridges Gaps in South West Garo Hills
South West Garo Hills is gearing up for a targeted immunization initiative in February to address the shortfall in routine vaccinations among older children, as reported during a pivotal high-level review meeting. The assembly, presided over by Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak, welcomed officials from various departments, including health, education, and social welfare, to evaluate the strides made in immunization, child mortality, and bio-medical waste management.
Health officials noted that as of January 2025, 97% of infants were fully immunized, but vaccination rates among children aged 16-24 months, 5 years, 10 years, and 16 years were still under par. To remedy this, a comprehensive village-level immunization campaign is slated for late February. It will be followed by a tetanus and diphtheria (Td) vaccination drive in schools during the first half of March for students aged 10 and 16.
The meeting further scrutinized child mortality statistics, with DMCHO Dr. Noreen Sangma presenting data on deaths recorded between April 2024 and January 2025. The attendance of family members of deceased children underscored the gravity of the discussion, as officials sought to identify factors skewing the district’s Infant Mortality Rate (IMR). In response, Deputy Commissioner Nayak advocated a cross-sectoral approach to mitigate IMR and called for an exhaustive investigation of high-risk locales.
Additionally, authorities highlighted the significance of helpline number 14401, urging its promotion to ensure the public’s access to medical assistance and support services.
The district administration reiterated its commitment to enhancing immunization and child health programs through strategic, inter-departmental collaboration. This initiative underscores the administration’s ongoing dedication to improving the region’s public health standards and addressing crucial gaps in healthcare delivery.
