India’s Dominating Clean Sweep: Thrashing England by 142 Runs in ODI Series, Sparking Excitement for Champions Trophy
India secured a spectacular series sweep against England with a commanding 142-run victory in the third and final ODI in Ahmedabad on February 12. This triumph marked an ideal conclusion to their Champions Trophy preparations. Shubman Gill was the standout performer, scoring a brilliant 112 off 102 balls, marking his seventh ODI century. He was well supported by Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, who contributed 52 and 78 runs respectively, leading India to an imposing total of 356 runs.
India’s bowlers then dismantled England’s batting lineup, limiting them to just 214 runs in 34.2 overs. This victory ranks as India’s second-largest ODI win over England by runs. Despite a promising start from England openers Ben Duckett and Phil Salt, who scored 34 and 24 runs respectively, the visitors faltered against India’s spin attack on a slowing surface.
India captain Rohit Sharma and bowler Arshdeep Singh played pivotal roles, with the latter claiming crucial wickets. Axar Patel and Harshit Rana contributed significantly to England’s downfall by taking crucial wickets at key moments.
Gill’s century was notable not just for its brilliance but also because it marked his achievement of scoring a ton in all three international formats at the same venue, the Narendra Modi Stadium. Meanwhile, Kohli remains just 37 runs short of joining the elite 14,000 ODI runs club and is poised to reach this milestone during the upcoming Champions Trophy. Despite a strong performance throughout the series, Rohit and Iyer missed personal milestones in this match. Rohit was dismissed cheaply, and Iyer fell short of a century, edged out by a delivery from Rashid.
This decisive win reinforces India’s confidence ahead of the Champions Trophy, showcasing their batting depth and bowling prowess.
