Empowered Women Demand Stability: Rally Against Biren Singh’s Resignation Sparks Hope for Manipur’s Future
Amid the political turmoil in Manipur, large-scale protests have erupted, mainly led by women, against the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The demonstrators are voicing their frustration over perceived internal power struggles within the BJP-led government and warning that such instability could exacerbate the state’s ongoing crisis.
The protests have been particularly prominent in regions like Heingang, Sugnu, and Kumbi, where women expressed concerns about the impact of the political unrest on the ongoing conflict and the growing influence of external forces, notably the Kuki-Narco insurgents.
In Imphal East, at SDC Ground, Laipham Khunou, women from Heingang demanded an end to BJP’s internal strife. They chanted, “The politics of Kuki-Narco terrorists aims to divide Manipur,” and opposed any resignation of N. Biren Singh, emphasizing that safeguarding the state should take precedence over political rivalries. Protesters also resisted any potential arrests of village defense volunteers.
Similarly, in Pangantabi, Sugnu Assembly Constituency, women led by Meira Paibis denounced the resignation and infighting within the BJP, which they claim detracts from crucial efforts to resolve Manipur’s crisis. In Kumbi, women from Wangoo Ahallup and Pombikhok demanded an end to the political chaos, arguing that the resignation of CM Biren Singh has only worsened the situation.
The protesters expressed a deep apprehension that the BJP’s internal discord could lead to the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, an outcome they strongly oppose. They called for an end to political maneuvering and urged prompt action to restore stability and address the ongoing conflict that continues to grip the state. The demonstrators made it clear that Manipur needs strong, unified leadership rather than continued internal disputes.
