Devastating Unseasonal Storms Leave Dibrugarh and Tinsukia Reeling in Chaos as Power Outages Strike
In the early hours of Thursday, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts experienced unseasonal heavy rain and a severe storm, causing widespread destruction. The storm, lasting about 50 minutes from 12:30 am to 1:20 am, uprooted large trees, which fell onto homes and power lines. The Jokai Borbill area of Dibrugarh was severely affected, with significant structural damage to at least twelve houses. Sanat Saikia, Mangali Kaul, Aghoni Kaul, and Putuli Majhi’s homes were completely destroyed, leaving their families homeless. Eight individuals sustained injuries from the storm, but all are reported to be in stable condition after receiving medical attention.
Additionally, the storm caused a power outage by damaging electric wires and poles, and authorities estimate at least a 12-hour period for electricity restoration. Local residents were left shocked, as such intense weather events are unusual during the winter months. “I’ve never seen anything like this in winter,” explained Mangali Kaul, recounting the frightening moment a tree crashed through her roof.
Efforts are underway by officials from the district disaster management authority to assess the damage and coordinate relief operations. Teams have been deployed to clear debris and assist affected families, utilizing manpower and machinery to expedite recovery efforts.
In Tinsukia’s Nagajan Bojalani village, part of the Makum area, several homes suffered similar fates, having roofs torn off by the winds. The storm also significantly impacted Duliajan College, where numerous trees blocked pathways and damaged campus facilities. The college staff estimates at least a day is required to clear the damage.
Authorities are working diligently on damage assessments and providing immediate relief to impacted families to restore normalcy as swiftly as possible.
