Controversy Erupts: Teachers’ Rationalisation Initiative Faces Intense Scrutiny | MorungExpress
The Ao Students Conference (AKM), Kandi Students’ Union (KSU), and Tobu Area Students’ Union (TASU) have condemned the Nagaland government’s decision to transfer 1,372 government teachers, citing it as unjust. The recent directive issued by the Directorate of School Education involves the immediate redeployment of 840 Primary Teachers, 341 Graduate Teachers, and 191 GHT & UGHT. Teachers must report to their new postings within seven days or face withheld salaries, with no retention requests considered.
While acknowledging the need for rationalization in education, the AKM criticized the current execution as poorly planned, particularly affecting rural schools where teachers are scarce. They argue that teacher-student ratios in rural areas differ from urban counterparts and should be reflected in the rationalization. The AKM also emphasizes a transparent, politically unconstrained approach and suggests that teachers unwilling to serve in rural areas should consider voluntary retirement.
Supporting the Directorate’s efforts but critiquing the implementation, the KSU highlighted disproportionate impacts on certain schools, such as GMS Kandinu Upper, which lost six teachers without replacements, unlike comparable schools. They urged fair redistribution across districts to avoid socio-economic repercussions.
In Tobu Sub-Division, TASU reported a severe teacher shortage compounded by the rationalization order, leaving schools struggling to function effectively. They also shed light on healthcare inadequacies due to staff transfers without replacements, compelling residents to seek medical attention outside the region at great risk. TASU has cautioned all Heads of Departments to remain at their postings from March 2025 or face disciplinary actions.
The collective student bodies call for immediate corrective measures from the government to alleviate the educational and healthcare crises in affected regions, aiming for a fairer approach to resource distribution and staff management.
