United in Heritage: Passionate Citizens of Karimganj Stand Firm Against Controversial Name Change, Demand Government Transparency
A citizens’ convention took place on February 12 at Bipin Chandra Pal Bhavan in Sribhumi to oppose the proposed renaming of Karimganj district. Leading the charge, Advocate Arunangsha Bhattacharya vocally criticized the decision, insisting that Karimganj holds substantial historical value, particularly linked to India’s struggle for independence. Bhattacharya highlighted the 1961 Language Movement, a pivotal event where individuals sacrificed their lives, thus solidifying the district’s stature as a bastion of linguistic and cultural heritage.
Bhattacharya suggested that the government’s push for this renaming stems from communal motives, urging transparency and inclusiveness in decision-making processes. While he conceded that changing place names is not unheard of globally, he questioned the lack of communication and consultation with political parties and civil society groups before proceeding with such a significant alteration.
The meeting was not merely rhetorical in its opposition; participants organized a specialized committee aimed at escalating their protest efforts. This committee is tasked with galvanizing community support and coordinating actions to prevent the renaming, reflecting the residents’ strong attachment to Karimganj’s historical identity.
The assembly underscored a broader sentiment of unease among the citizens, who fear the erasure of their district’s storied past and cultural essence. The gathering serves as a significant marker of public dissent against unilateral government actions perceived to be driven by questionable motives, calling for greater participatory dialogue in governance.
