Jasprit Bumrah, a key member of India’s pace attack, has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a persistent lower back injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed this decision late on Tuesday. Following the injury incurred during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah was advised to take a five-week rest but has not recuperated in time for the tournament, as revealed by Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar. The 23-year-old Harshit Rana has been chosen to replace Bumrah, bringing the promising pacer into the fold after an impressive ODI stint against England, where he claimed four wickets in two matches.
In a surprising move, the selection committee has also sidelined young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, opting instead for 33-year-old mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy. Chakaravarthy earned his place following an outstanding performance in the T20I series against England, where he secured 14 wickets in five games and was named ‘Player of the Series’. Despite Jaiswal being a prolific scorer across all formats in 2024, he has limited experience in ODIs, which may have influenced the decision to retain the spin-heavy option of Chakaravarthy.
India has also announced three non-traveling substitutes — Yashasvi Jaiswal, pacer Mohammed Siraj, and all-rounder Shivam Dube — who will be on standby and can join the squad in Dubai if needed. The final squad for the tournament sees Rohit Sharma returning as captain, supported by vice-captain Shubman Gill, and a mix of seasoned players including Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul. The inclusion of young talents like Harshit Rana and key specialists like Varun Chakaravarthy highlights India’s strategic intent to balance experience with emerging prowess as they aim for success in the upcoming Champions Trophy.
