Exciting Adventure Awaits: J&K Government Unveils Ambitious Plan to Explore Skiing Feasibility at 7 Breathtaking Tourist Destinations
The Jammu and Kashmir government has embarked on an ambitious venture to evaluate the potential for skiing at seven new tourist locations, aiming to boost tourism in the Union Territory. The proposed sites include four destinations in the Kashmir region—Sonamarg in Ganderbal district, Doodhpathri and Tosamaidan in Budgam district, and Bangus in Kupwara district—and three in the Jammu region—Sarthal in Kathua district, Sanasar-Patnitop in Ramban district, and Bhaderwah in Doda district.
This initiative follows a notable increase in tourist visits to the region, with a record 2.95 million tourists in 2024, up from 2.71 million in 2023 and 2.67 million in 2022, according to Akashvani Jammu Correspondent. The endeavor is a collaborative effort steered by the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC), designated as the Nodal Agency by the J&K Tourism Ministry. The JKCCC is responsible for selecting potential skiing sites and compiling feasibility reports.
As part of this development, the JKCCC has issued tenders inviting consultancy firms to assess the feasibility of skiing at these new sites. Qualified bidders will be tasked with inspecting and evaluating the sites based on crucial factors like current tourist footfall, the duration and longevity of snowfall, and the terrain’s slope. The results of these assessments will guide the Board of Directors in preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the installation of ski drag lifts, chair lifts, and the development of ski slopes, along with necessary infrastructure.
This expansion strategy aims to diversify the tourism portfolio of Jammu and Kashmir, potentially transforming it into a skiing hub that could attract a broader range of visitors. By creating new skiing destinations, the government hopes to leverage the natural landscape of the region to foster economic growth and further elevate its status as a premier tourist location.
