Filmmaker Prasanna Vithanage’s Bold Critique of Trump’s Border Policies Ignites Passion at GAFF – Northeast News
Renowned Sri Lankan filmmaker Prasanna Vithanage delivered a compelling critique of US President Donald Trump’s border policies at the launch of the Guwahati Asian Film Festival (GAFF), emphasizing a worrisome rise in global isolationism. Vithanage highlighted the festival’s theme, “Cinema Beyond Borders,” as a counterpoint to political efforts focused on division. His remarks underscored the belief that cinema serves as a vital tool for building international connections amid a fragmented world.
In Guwahati for the fourth time, Vithanage spoke passionately about his commitments to Assam, influenced by his receipt of the esteemed Biswaratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika International Solidarity Award in 2017. He expressed deep respect for his ties to the region and its cultural impact on his work and sense of duty.
The filmmaker praised Assamese cinema, citing legends such as Jahnu Barua and contemporary talents like Rima Das and Shiladitya Bora, acknowledging their contributions to the global film landscape. Vithanage particularly admired Barua’s film “Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai,” calling it a masterpiece with profound artistic value. He also highlighted the notable contributions of filmmakers Manju Borah and Monita Borgohain, the Honorary Festival Director for GAFF 2025, praising their dedication to promoting Assamese cinema.
Vithanage inaugurated the GAFF, setting an optimistic tone for the festival, which aims to foster artistic dialogue and global storytelling. Despite challenges like a lack of direct government support, the event is positioned to evolve into a vital platform for independent filmmakers and enthusiasts, with Vithanage’s involvement as a significant endorsement of its mission. The festival, with its focus on transcending borders through cinema, aspires to unite diverse cultures, reinforcing its global significance in the contemporary artistic landscape.
