Fierce Showdown: Protesters and Police Clash Over Urgent ST Status and 6th Schedule Demand in Tinsukia

Tensions escalated in Talap, Tinsukia district, as a rally led by the All Moran Students’ Union (AMSU) turned violent, resulting in clashes with police. This unrest stemmed from a wider protest movement across Assam’s locations like Tinsukia, Makum, and Digboi, extending to Mahadevpur in Arunachal Pradesh. The AMSU is demanding tribal status for the Moran community, their inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, and permanent resident certificates for those residing in Arunachal Pradesh.

During the agitation in Talap, allegations emerged of excessive police force, with multiple protesters reportedly injured. Meanwhile, there were unverified reports of casualties among the security personnel. The volatile situation intensified when protesters obstructed National Highway 37, disrupting traffic and stranding passengers traveling to and from Sadiya and Arunachal Pradesh.

The aftermath of the clashes drew strong reactions from newly elected assistant general secretary of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and leaders from the All Matok Youth Students’ Conference. These leaders condemned the police actions and the ensuing injuries to demonstrators, vociferously calling for justice and accountability.
