K-pop superstar Jisoo of Blackpink is set to venture into the realm of the undead with her upcoming series “Newtopia,” which premieres this Friday on Prime Video and Coupang Play. Directed by Yoon Sung-hyun, the series charts the tumultuous journey of Lee Jae-yoon, played by Park, and Kang Young-joo, portrayed by Jisoo, as they deal with a breakup in the midst of a zombie outbreak in Seoul.
Jisoo expressed her enthusiasm for the project, noting the innovative portrayal of zombies. “During pre-production, they showed us some prototypes of the zombies. Many were unlike anything I had ever seen before. I haven’t seen how they look on screen yet, so I’m really curious,” she shared.
“Newtopia” aims to break away from conventional gory zombie tropes, offering audiences something fresh. Jisoo hinted at the unique design of the undead, saying, “Some of the zombies don’t resemble humans at all—they look quite unique. Viewers will probably go, ‘Oh, I never imagined zombies could be designed this way.'”
But this isn’t merely another grim apocalyptic story. The series features a blend of intense action and comic relief, ensuring that audiences aren’t overwhelmed by the darker themes. Jisoo remarked, “Whenever things get heavy, different characters step in to lighten the mood. We turn intense situations into something funny, giving viewers a chance to laugh.
