Furious Protest in Guwahati: APCC Condemns US Deportation of Indians and Blasts PM Modi
Guwahati, Feb 7: In a spirited display of dissent, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) organized a protest at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati on Friday, decrying the deportation of 104 Indian migrants by the United States government. Demonstrators, including party members and workers, took to the streets chanting slogans like “Humans, not prisoners,” while castigating Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his silence on the issue.
APCC MLA and working president, Zakir Hussain Sikder, criticized the treatment of the deported individuals, who were reportedly restrained with handcuffs and chains, claiming, “We are not scared of anyone; instead, Modi is scared of Donald Trump.” Sikder’s outcry led to his brief detention by security forces after attempting to heighten the protest by crossing a barricade.
The protest underscores a significant grievance against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, with Sikder demanding accountability for the perceived maltreatment of Indian migrants by the US. The recent deportees included individuals from various Indian states—30 from Punjab, 33 from Haryana, 33 from Gujarat, three each from Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, and two from Chandigarh.
Concurrently, India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, addressed the issue in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, recognizing illegal migration to the US as an enduring challenge. Jaishankar assured the House that the Indian government had confirmed the nationality of the deportees and insisted on investigation of the illegal entry of these individuals into the US. He emphasized that deportations like these have been recurring over the years, indicating a longstanding concern that the government is endeavoring to address.
