Empowering Workers: CITU’s Passionate Fight for 10 Vital Welfare Demands at DMN
CITU Hosts Sit-In Demonstration in Agartala for Workers’ Rights
Agartala, 6th February 2025: In a powerful demonstration advocating for workers’ welfare, the CITU Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Committee organized a two-hour sit-in at the Netaji statue in central Agartala. The protest, which drew participation from workers across various professions, focused on long-standing issues of economic exploitation and inadequate support over the past seven years.
Central to the protest were concerns regarding stagnant wages for tea garden workers, the non-regularization of irregular workers, and delayed pension and provident fund payments. Protestors highlighted that many tea garden workers suffer from economic exploitation and emphasized issues such as harassment by garden authorities, and the failure to construct or repair essential housing for workers.
In addition to the plight of tea workers, the protest spotlighted the difficulties faced by MGNREGA and TUEP workers, who are grappling with unpaid wages, resulting in severe food shortages in their homes. Furthermore, the demonstration called attention to the shortage of drinking water in rural areas, affecting many communities.
The protest also addressed the struggles of transport workers, who face economic blockades, exploitation, and aggressive intimidation from ruling party affiliates. A protest leader voiced the collective frustration, stating, "Our workers are constantly being harassed, and their basic needs are not being met. This cannot continue."
Key figures such as Manik Dey, Bijita Nath, and Amitabh Datta were present to lend their support to this cause. Following the demonstration, leaders submitted a ten-point demand letter to the sub-district magistrate, outlining their grievances and calling for immediate action.
This sit-in drew attention to the critical need for fair wages, regularization of irregular workers, timely pension payments, and improved living standards for the working class, urging continued efforts to safeguard workers’ rights and welfare in the region.
