Empowered and Resilient: Jupangbari Women Transform Their Lives with Exquisite Bamboo Jewelry
Women from the Rabha tribal community in Jupangbari, a forest village near Chandubi Lake, Guwahati, have found a sustainable income source by creating and selling bamboo jewelry. Located 50 kilometers from Guwahati, Jupangbari’s residents have embraced bamboo craft as a form of self-employment under the guidance of instructor Pallav Rabha. The training has empowered these women with the skills to craft intricate bamboo jewelry and other items, paving the way for a stable income and motivating other women in the village to pursue similar ventures.
Pallav Rabha, 31, has invested the last five years in training villagers across Assam. His work, which showcases bamboo jewelry and other crafts, has been featured in exhibitions in Guwahati, various parts of Assam, and even Rajasthan. The group of 15 women artisans not only makes bamboo jewelry to sell through pre-orders but also participates in exhibitions to display their craftsmanship. Trained by the forest department and the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Rabha has facilitated the women’s journey toward financial independence.
Among those trained is Junmoni Rabha, who, two years ago, participated in a 16-day session led by Pallav Rabha. Before this training, many women, including Rabha, were primarily housewives without employment. Now, they earn income by selling bamboo jewelry at exhibitions, gaining appreciation and respect for their artistry.
Through their commitment to learning and creativity, these women are creating a model of financial independence and empowerment, encouraging more participants from their community. This initiative not only sustains the livelihoods of these artisans but also highlights the potential of traditional crafts to foster economic growth and social development in rural areas.
