Desperate Parents Demand Justice as HC Reconsiders RG Kar Corruption Case: A High-Stakes Reprobe
Parents of the doctor who was a victim of rape and murder at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital have requested additional time from the Calcutta High Court regarding its order for a reinvestigation of the case. Their attorney, Gargi Goswami, informed the court of their parallel appeal to the Supreme Court, questioning whether the single bench of the Calcutta High Court has the authority to preside over the matter. A hearing is anticipated in the Supreme Court this week, prompting the request for more time.
Meanwhile, the state government has submitted a report to the court, distancing itself from the investigation process, claiming it had “no role” in it. The victim’s parents first approached the High Court in December 2024, expressing a lack of trust in the ongoing CBI investigation, citing concerns over lost key evidence, and advocating for a new probe.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, leading the single bench, chose to defer action, seeking guidance from the Supreme Court due to the previous assignment of the case to the CBI by a division bench, which also required periodic progress reports.
The controversy began when former R G Kar Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh and Tala police station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondal were arrested in September 2024, accused of tampering with evidence and attempting to suppress the case. They were granted bail in December of the same year after the CBI did not file a chargesheet within 90 days.
Initially, the High Court transferred the case to the CBI, suspecting a bias in the local police probe. The primary suspect, civic police volunteer Sanjay Roy, was arrested three days prior to the transfer for the crime that took place on August 9, 2024. The trial commenced in November, and Roy received a life imprisonment sentence from a Sealdah trial court in January.
