Shocking ASER Report Reveals Alarming Decline in Rural Students’ Reading and Numeracy Skills
The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2024 has unveiled disparities in rural Meghalaya’s education landscape, highlighting issues in reading habits, numeracy, digital literacy, and school infrastructure. Despite rising school enrolment, only 17.2% of students engage with books from school libraries, pointing to challenges in integrating libraries effectively into the educational process.
The report, crafted by Pratham, notes that while literacy is on the rise among younger students, numeracy skills lag significantly. Only 7.2% of government school students in the third grade can perform division, far below the national average of 27.8%. Furthermore, school dropout rates in Meghalaya surpass the national average, particularly concerning for 15 to 16-year-olds.
Digital literacy emerges as a crucial issue; although almost 95% of surveyed households possess smartphones, only about half of the children know how to leverage them for educational purposes. This highlights a critical gap in digital education.
School infrastructure also presents challenges, with just 62.3% of schools equipped with usable toilets and nearly half lacking separate facilities for girls. Additionally, a staggering 96.7% of schools do not provide computers for student use, emphasizing a severe shortfall in digital resources.
In summary, the ASER 2024 report brings to light the pressing educational challenges in rural Meghalaya. Addressing these gaps is vital for improving learning outcomes and ensuring students can compete on a national level.
