Exciting Milestone: Transformative Third Phase of Gunotsav Ignites Progress in Assam’s 12,374 Schools
The third phase of Gunotsav began today, with 12,374 schools across 10 districts in Assam successfully performing self-assessments for 9,81,565 students. This critical initiative is designed to evaluate and enhance educational quality in the state through structured assessments and targeted improvements. External assessments are scheduled to start tomorrow, and authorities have called on all involved to ensure smooth implementation in accordance with established guidelines.
However, earlier in the year, the initiative was marred by a significant protest at Jaruarchar Public High School in the Dhubri district. In January, more than 1,200 students voiced their dissatisfaction with what they described as mismanagement during the Gunotsav examinations. Their grievances centered around inadequate seating arrangements, which forced six students to share a single bench, creating uncomfortable and disruptive testing conditions.
The situation escalated when it was discovered that the headmaster, Ayub Ali, was absent on the crucial examination day. This absence, coupled with the delayed start of the exam—scheduled for 9:00 AM but beginning at 10:20 AM—heightened the students’ frustrations. The students demanded immediate intervention from Assam’s Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, seeking corrective action against the headmaster for what they perceived as gross negligence and irregularities.
Authorities are hopeful that the upcoming phase of external assessments will proceed without incident, emphasizing the importance of adherence to guidelines to prevent a repeat of past issues. The goal remains to uphold the integrity of Gunotsav as a key initiative in improving education standards across Assam.
In moving forward, the organizers of Gunotsav aim to learn from past challenges, ensuring that such disruptions do not overshadow the positive impact of this state-wide educational evaluation effort.
