Essential HPV Vaccine for Boys: A Crucial Step in Preventing Life-Threatening Penile and Anal Cancer
On World Cancer Day, health experts in Lucknow highlighted the importance of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for both boys and girls. While the HPV vaccine is often associated with preventing cervical cancer, experts noted that vaccinating boys aged 9 to 14 can help prevent penile, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers. Dr. Deepa Kapoor emphasized that administering the vaccine within this age group significantly reduces cancer risks. In India, the government has approved the vaccine for boys up to 14 years old, recommending two doses six months apart for children aged 9 to 14. Girls older than 14 require a three-dose schedule. The vaccine is also approved for women up to 45 years of age.
Dr. Rakesh Kapoor from Medanta Hospital stressed the importance of early vaccination, particularly before sexual activity begins, as it offers the most effective protection. The cost of the HPV vaccine is approximately Rs 6000, although India’s locally developed Cervavac is available for Rs 2000, with experts calling for more research on its efficacy. Prof. Rajeev Gupta suggested including the HPV vaccine in India’s Universal Immunisation Program, likening its potential success to the polio vaccination campaign.
Beyond HPV, Dr. Amit Agrawal pointed to genetic testing as a tool for identifying heightened risks of breast and ovarian cancers, which can be as high as a 60% chance for breast cancer and a 90% chance for ovarian cancer in some women. Emotionally, experts like Alok Gupta emphasized supporting the mental health of cancer patients.
Concurrently, a blood donation camp held at Kalyan Singh Super Specialty Cancer Institute stressed the ongoing critical need for blood in cancer treatments. Dr. MLB Bhatt underscored the irreplaceable role of blood, akin to organ donation, in modern medical care.
