Unveiling EAGLE: The Groundbreaking Congress Committee Vigilantly Safeguarding Election Integrity

The Congress party has established an eight-member committee, named Empowered Action Group of Leaders and Experts (EAGLE), to oversee elections in India and ensure their integrity under the Election Commission of India. This move follows Congress’s recent electoral defeats in Haryana and Maharashtra, where they cited electoral malpractices and manipulation, particularly with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and voter list discrepancies.

The EAGLE committee, reporting to Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, will initially focus on the alleged voter increase in Maharashtra and the upcoming February 5 Delhi Assembly elections. Key members include Congress treasurer Ajay Maken and senior leaders such as Digvijaya Singh and Abhishek Manu Singhvi. The group aims to provide a vigilant, overarching view of the electoral process, with a critical eye on the Election Commission’s actions. Congress criticizes the commission for not conducting fair elections in recent states.

The naming of the committee was suggested by Praveen Chakravarty, who heads the All India Professionals’ Congress and the party’s data analytics department, highlighting its role in monitoring elections keenly.

Congress’s skepticism of the electoral process amplified after alleging EVM manipulation in Haryana, marking a significant moment as they refused to accept the election results. Further concerns arose in Maharashtra with a reported “shocking” 13% increase in voters since the previous Lok Sabha elections. Despite the Election Commission’s explanation citing legal amendments and demographic changes, Congress remains dissatisfied, alleging discrepancies and lack of transparency.

Rahul Gandhi reinforced the party’s mistrust at the opening of a new Congress headquarters, pointing to systemic issues and the mysterious increase of registered voters in Maharashtra, further cementing the party’s call for reforms and accountability within the electoral system.
