Shocking Crisis: Bangladesh’s Anti-India Tensions and Yunus Govt’s Financial Struggles Trigger Massive Power Outages
Bangladesh is on the brink of a nationwide power crisis as the interim Muhammad Yunus-led government struggles to pay debts owed to power producers, including India’s Adani Group. With the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) owing Tk 43,473 crore to various independent power producers (IPPs) and state-owned entities like Petrobangla, the country faces a looming power shortfall. Specifically, Adani Power is owed Tk 10,309 crore, while local IPPs and joint-venture plants like Pera and Rampal are collectively owed substantial amounts.
The Bangladesh Independent Power Producers Association (BIPA) has warned that the government must clear at least part of the Tk 16,000 crore owed to IPPs to avoid a potential shortfall of 3,500-4,000 megawatts in the coming summer months. Last year, Bangladesh experienced a peak demand of 17,200 MW, falling short by 2,200 MW. This figure is expected to rise to 18,232 MW this summer.
Despite these alarming figures, a senior BPDB official has stated that actual dues are reportedly less than publicized, as Tk 8,000 crore was recently paid to private producers. The government plans to prioritize cost-effective coal-fired power generation to mitigate the shortfall, shifting focus from more expensive imported gas and oil options.
Adani Power previously reduced electricity supply to Bangladesh by 60% due to outstanding payments exceeding $800 million, affecting supplies from its Godda plant in Jharkhand. The political situation has further strained India-Bangladesh relations, degraded after the removal of Sheikh Hasina and amid ongoing communal tensions and violence against minorities, particularly Hindus, igniting concerns over the interim government’s management.
With summer approaching and demand surging, the crisis underscores the urgent need for financial and infrastructural resolutions to avert large-scale blackouts and power shortages in Bangladesh.
