Fiery Outcry: Congress MP Akoijam Demands Urgent Joint Parliamentary Probe into Manipur’s Alarming Constitutional Breakdown
In a stark warning to the Lok Sabha, Congress MP A B Akoijam from Manipur raised grave concerns over what he described as a complete breakdown of constitutional order in the state. During the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address, Akoijam alleged that elected representatives faced restrictions in performing their duties and moving freely within Manipur, pointing to a significant erosion of democratic processes.
Highlighting severe human rights abuses, Akoijam accused central security forces of killing innocent villagers, thereby creating a landscape of fear and lawlessness in the northeastern state. He criticized the BJP-led central government for its silence on the mounting crisis, portraying it as a striking contradiction to the ideals celebrated during the 75th anniversary of India’s Constitution.
The Congress MP further illustrated the gravity of the situation by describing direct confrontations between state police and central forces, indicating a severe collapse of administrative authority. He accused the Union government of undermining the legislative power of the Manipur Assembly and the respect due to its elected officials.
Akoijam voiced his disappointment over President Droupadi Murmu’s address to Parliament, which he argued failed to recognize the unfolding crisis in Manipur. The state, since May 2023, has been beset by violent ethnic clashes, resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives, yet received no mention in the President’s speech.
In a call to action, Akoijam urged the formation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to thoroughly investigate the crisis in Manipur. He emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to address and resolve the deteriorating situation effectively and promptly. This assertion comes amidst a backdrop of significant unrest, calling for a reassessment of administrative strategies and highlighting the dire need for resolution and accountability.
