Guwahati, Feb 3: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, calling him a “hypocrite” over his demand for transparency in the appointment of Election Commissioners. This comes after Gandhi’s comments in the Lok Sabha, questioning the exclusion of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from the selection committee for Election Commissioners. Gandhi contended that the changes skew the committee towards the ruling party, as it is now composed only of the Prime Minister and Home Minister, potentially inhibiting balanced discussion.

Sarma accused the Congress of duplicity, pointing out that during its rule, the party appointed Election Commissioners unilaterally, without transparency or reform. “If Congress believed in transparency, they should have implemented these reforms during their tenure,” Sarma stated on social media, suggesting that this newfound call for accountability is a political tactic. He underscored the perceived irony in Gandhi’s stance, urging the Congress to “practice what you preach.”

Gandhi also raised concerns about the timing of changes in the Election Commission just ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, alleging it could impact the commission’s independence. He highlighted what he deemed anomalies in voter registration in Maharashtra, where he claimed a suspicious number of almost 70 lakh new voters were added post the last election, particularly noting a single building in Shirdi registered over 7,000 new voters, calling for data transparency from the Election Commission.
