Heartbreaking News: Novak Djokovic Withdraws from Davis Cup Qualifiers Amid Hamstring Woes
NEW DELHI: Novak Djokovic, currently ranked world number six, has withdrawn from Serbia’s Davis Cup first-round qualifying match against Denmark due to an injury, the Serbian Tennis Federation (TSS) confirmed. The match is scheduled for January 31 to February 2 in Copenhagen. Djokovic sustained a hamstring injury during his Australian Open semifinal match against Alexander Zverev last week, forcing him to retire mid-game.
The 24-time Grand Slam winner faced criticism from the crowd at Melbourne Park, which prompted him to share an MRI image of his injured left hamstring on social media, captioned, “Thought I’d leave this here for all the sports injury ‘experts’ out there.” At age 37, Djokovic remains an iconic figure in tennis, having been part of the Serbian team that famously clinched the Davis Cup title in 2010 after defeating France in Belgrade.
This withdrawal is a significant development for Serbia as they prepare for their tie against Denmark. Djokovic’s presence is always a substantial boost for the team, given his extensive experience and past success in the tournament. Despite this setback, the Serbian team will strive to advance in the Davis Cup without him.
