Breaking: Guwahati Police Triumph Over ATM Fraud Racket, Arrest 5 in Shocking Cybercrime Network Takedown
In a major breakthrough, the Basistha Police in Guwahati successfully dismantled a significant ATM fraud racket, arresting five individuals implicated in sophisticated financial scams. The arrested suspects are Asif Iqbal Hussain, Sahil Ahmed, Ariful Islam, Dewan Azlan Haris, and Abdul Azad. During the operation, law enforcement recovered 17 ATM cards linked to various banks, in addition to seizing two motorcycles and two iPhones, allegedly used in fraudulent activities.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that this group employed cunning tactics to deceive unsuspecting customers, facilitating the unlawful withdrawal of money through stolen or cloned ATM cards. Authorities suspect these individuals might be part of a broader network involved in financial fraud, prompting further inquiries to uncover additional connections.
This recent incident echoes a significant cybercrime bust the previous year by the Gorchuk Police team in Guwahati, led by Inspector Mayurjit Gogoi. In that operation, a group of cyber fraudsters was exposed, operating out of a lodge in Boragaon. These fraudsters exploited “Mule Bank Accounts” to channel money stolen from unsuspecting victims.
The investigation uncovered that the accused targeted susceptible individuals, enticing them to open bank accounts with promises of substantial profits. Once the accounts were opened, the fraudsters collected the account holders’ banking documents, including passbooks, ATM cards, and cheque books. These documents were then handed over to another cybercrime group. For each account established, the fraudsters earned approximately Rs 1,00,000, while the account holders received 20 per cent of the total transaction amount.
The dismantling of this ATM fraud racket by the Basistha Police underscores the persistent threat of financial and cyber crimes. The ongoing investigation aims to trace and dismantle the wider network involved in these illicit activities, safeguarding unsuspecting citizens from similar scams in the future.
