Breaking: Shockwaves as South Korea’s Impeached President Yoon Jailed for Controversial Martial Law Declaration
South Korea’s former president, Yoon Suk Yeol, was arrested early Sunday, following his detention at the presidential compound in Seoul last week, as reported by AP. His arrest comes after allegations of rebellion following his declaration of martial law on December 3—a move considered the gravest political crisis since South Korea’s democratization in the late 1980s. The Seoul Western District Court issued an arrest warrant, highlighting concerns that Yoon might destroy evidence. This decision allows the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials, along with police and military support, to detain Yoon for up to 20 days before handing the case over to prosecutors.
Yoon’s court appearance led to chaotic scenes, with thousands of his supporters clashing with police outside the Seoul Western District Court. Around 40 protesters were detained, including 20 who tried to breach the court’s perimeter. During the nearly five-hour closed-door hearing, Yoon spoke for about 40 minutes through his lawyers, disputing the need for his detention by asserting he posed no flight risk or threat of evidence tampering.
The political turmoil began on December 3 when Yoon declared martial law, deploying troops to key government locations. The move was short-lived, ending within hours as lawmakers successfully voted against it. Yoon was impeached by an opposition-controlled assembly on December 14. Since then, nine officials, including Yoon’s defense minister and top military figures, have been arrested for their roles in the martial law enforcement. Prosecutors have suggested that charges of rebellion could lead to severe penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty.
Investigators accuse Yoon of ignoring requests for questioning and obstructing an earlier arrest attempt through his security team. Yoon’s lawyer, Yoon Kab-keun, defended the martial law declaration as a legitimate exercise of power, asserting that rebellion charges would not stand in court.
