Heartbreaking Impact: 50 Acres of Vital Poppy Plantation Devastated in Ukhrul
Imphal: In a determined effort to combat illegal poppy cultivation, authorities in Manipur have destroyed approximately 50 acres of illicit opium plantations in the state’s eastern regions bordering Myanmar. This action is part of the ongoing “War On Drugs” initiative launched by the Manipur Government in 2017.
The operation took place in the Mullam Village area of Ukhrul District and involved a coordinated effort by multiple agencies, including the Ukhrul District Police, 6 Manipur Rifles, Ukhrul’s Forest Department, Border Security Forces, and 8 Bihar Regiment. The eradication team used grass cutters, sticks, and herbicides to dismantle the mature poppy plants ready for harvest.
Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) Ringthing Hongchui emphasized that these efforts will persist. He urged public cooperation to further combat the cultivation, which has led to severe environmental degradation, turning lush hills into barren lands. An FIR has been filed to aid in the identification and prosecution of those involved in these illegal activities.
Earlier, on January 10, another significant operation was conducted by a joint team of state and central forces, supervised by an Executive Magistrate. This led to the destruction of 90 acres of poppy fields and the burning of 12 huts in the Phalee hill range under Lungchong Maiphei Police Station in Ukhrul District.
These stringent actions reflect the state’s commitment to eradicating drug-related activities that have long plagued the region, illustrating a decisive step forward in restoring environmental and social health in Manipur.
