Encouraging Decline in HMPV Infections: Northern China’s Health Victory
Decline in Human Metapneumovirus Infections in Northern China
BEIJING, Jan 12: Concerns over a surge in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in northern China have eased as infection rates decline, according to health authorities. HMPV, similar to the respiratory syncytial virus, triggers symptoms such as fever, cough, and nasal congestion. While these often resolve on their own, the virus poses a higher risk to children, older adults, and the immunocompromised by potentially causing lower respiratory tract infections.
Wang Liping of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention assured that HMPV is not a new threat; it was first identified in 2001 but has likely circulated for decades. The rise in detected cases is attributed to enhanced detection capabilities rather than an actual increase in infections. Current data indicates a fluctuating, but overall declining, trend in positive cases, particularly in northern regions and among patients under the age of 14.
Recent images showing crowded hospitals have sparked fears of widespread outbreaks, but the World Health Organization reported no unusual HMPV activity in China or elsewhere. Experts emphasize that unlike COVID-19, HMPV has a historical presence and existing immunity within the population. Most children acquire the virus by age 5, reducing its pandemic potential.
According to Gao Xinqiang of the Department of Medical Emergency Response, the uptick in patients at fever clinics and emergency departments remains lower than last year’s rates, indicating an absence of resource shortages. Meanwhile, commission spokesperson Hu Qiangqiang projects a gradual decline in flu infections nationwide by mid-to-late January.
Without available vaccines or drugs for HMPV, experts recommend preventive measures such as frequent handwashing, avoiding crowded places, and wearing masks to mitigate risk. These precautions are vital to curb the spread of HMPV and other respiratory illnesses. (AP)
