Sikkim’s Unyielding Spirit: CM Prem Singh Tamang Defends Sovereignty with Passion and Resolve
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, while addressing the Namprikdang Namsoong Festival, firmly declared that Sikkim’s sovereignty is non-negotiable, refuting calls for a merger with Darjeeling. Tamang criticized the Gorkha Rashtriya Congress (GRC) for their contentious remarks and accused them of political opportunism.
In his speech, the Chief Minister condemned the GRC’s push for a Sikkim-Darjeeling merger, describing their tactics as disruptive. “This party always barks and shouts; it is in their blood,” Tamang stated. “They continuously seek chances to create unrest. Recently, they announced that failing a merger, they would protest and start an agitation. This is not feasible,” he asserted.
Tamang emphasized Sikkim’s distinctive historical and constitutional position, protected under Article 371(F) of the Indian Constitution. He stressed, “Sikkim has its own history and identity. Article 371(F) ensures our rights as India’s 22nd state, and no one can undermine that.”
He further highlighted the state’s unity and resilience, reinforcing, “Sikkim is a strong state. We uphold our vision of ‘Sunala Sikkim, Samriddhi Sikkim’ (Golden Sikkim, Prosperous Sikkim). The Union of India has consistently supported and respected us, leaving no reason for Sikkimese citizens to fear baseless claims.”
