Breakthrough on Naga Issue Stalled by Internal Strife: Insightful Analysis by Y Patton | MorungExpress
The Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland, Y Patton, highlighted internal challenges obstructing the resolution of the Indo-Naga political issue. Speaking at Duncan Bosti’s 75th founding anniversary in Dimapur on January 11, he noted that the division within the Naga political movement, splintered into 28 groups with only five holding Ceasefire Agreements with the Government of India (GoI), is a significant barrier to peace. He remarked on the numerous illegal taxes imposed on the people, questioning the sustainability under such conditions.
Patton mentioned that the GoI has offered to integrate the Naga flag and constitution into the Indian framework, emphasizing its stance of “One nation, one flag, one nation, one constitution.” He stressed the need for Naga unity to reach a solution, expressing concern that some groups might resist resolution to maintain their current influence and revenue. While acknowledging genuine causes among some Naga Political Groups (NPGs), Patton criticized those exploiting the movement for financial gain.
The state government, led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, positioned itself as a facilitator, promoting the concept of unity which brought eight political parties together to form an oppositionless government. Patton urged NPGs to reconcile their differences and for the public to foster unity instead of taking sides, warning that division only empowers opportunistic factions.
Additionally, MLA and Advisor Imkong L Imchen addressed the romanticized notion of Naga independence hindering progress and development. He highlighted issues such as extortion under the guise of the freedom struggle and stated that genuine independence requires nurturing harmony, tackling internal challenges, and building a self-reliant society.
The call for unity and authentic progress underlines the urgent need for a collective approach to overcome internal divisions and achieve lasting peace and development in Nagaland.
