Chaos Erupts: Curfew Enforced in Villages Amidst Allegations of Govt’s ₹6 Cr Deal with Militants!
Imphal, Jan 11 (PTI) — A curfew was imposed in the villages of Konsakhul and Leilon Vaiphei in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district due to rising tensions, as stated by district authorities. This unrest follows an alleged assault by Kuki youths on a Naga woman, exacerbating ethnic tensions between the Kuki and Meitei communities that have claimed over 250 lives and rendered thousands homeless since May 2023. Movement in the affected areas is restricted indefinitely to prevent breaches of peace.
In related developments, the Congress criticized Manipur’s BJP government for disbursing Rs 6.27 crore to the Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic), despite withdrawing from the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement. This payment was reportedly made in July 2024, contradicting the state’s declared exit from the pact in February 2023. The SoO agreement, in effect since 2013 under Congress rule, allowed HPC-D militants free movement without arms, provided they adhered to the agreement’s terms.
Keisham Meghachandra, Manipur Congress president, expressed his concerns during a press conference, questioning the rationale behind the fund distribution amid the ongoing violence. He emphasized the Congress’s commitment to peace and criticized the BJP government’s financial dealings with militant groups, highlighting a prior complaint of Rs 27.38 crore paid to SoO signatories violating guidelines in 2022, currently under CAG investigation.
This development adds to the complex socio-political dynamics in Manipur, further straining the already volatile situation marked by ethnic conflict. Both the curfew and financial controversies underscore the challenges faced by the state government in restoring peace and stability in the region.
