Breaking Chaos: Manipur’s Curfew Ignites Fear After Naga-Kuki Tension and Assam Rifles Camp Destruction
Curfew Imposed in Manipur’s Kangpokpi Amidst Ethnic Tensions, Assam Rifles Camp Attacked in Kamjong
Imphal, Jan 11: Authorities imposed a curfew in the Kangchup Geljang sub-division of Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Saturday due to escalating tensions between Naga and Kuki-Zo communities. The conflict, which centers around a territorial dispute, has persisted for three days. The Naga-dominated Konsakhul village claims ownership of the land where the Kuki-Zo-inhabited Leilon Vaiphei village is situated, a claim that has been contested. Recent allegations of a Naga woman being assaulted on January 7 have intensified the situation, prompting minor clashes between the communities.
In response, District Magistrate Mahesh Chaudhari enacted an indefinite public curfew under the BNSS, 2023, to curb further unrest. The order restricts movement in areas surrounding both villages with immediate effect, although there have been no reported injuries from the clashes.
In a separate incident in Kamjong district, unrest erupted when a mob dismantled a makeshift camp of the Assam Rifles. The conflict arose over alleged misconduct by the Assam Rifles, including harassment and restricting timber transportation for house construction in Kasom Khullen village. The police reported that the situation escalated when Assam Rifles personnel imposed limitations on timber transport. Attempts to disperse the mob involved the use of tear gas and firing into the air, although no injuries were reported.
Both incidents underscore the fragile sociopolitical atmosphere in Manipur, as ethnic disputes and grievances against authorities contribute to ongoing tensions. Residents and officials are urged to cooperate with law enforcement to restore peace and prevent further escalation during these sensitive incidents.
